An Act

Amending Section three hundred and forty-one of Act numbered threa

hundred and Fifty-five, and section thirty-one of Act numbered seventeen hundred and sixty-one, as amended, by Changing the Penalties for illegal importers and dealers in Opium.

By authority of the United States, be it enacted by the Philippine

Legislature, that:

Section 1. Section three hundred and forty-one of Act numbered Three hundred and fifty-five, known as "The Philippine

Customs Administrative Act", is hereby amended to read as follows:- "Sec. 341. If any person shall fraudulently or knowingly import or bring into the Philippine Islands, or assist in so doing,

any merchandise, contrary to law, or shall receive, conceal, buy,

sell, or in any manner facilitate the transportation, concealment, or sale of such merchandise after importation, knowing the same to

have been imported contrary to law, such merchandise shall be

seized and forfeited and the offender shall be fined in a sum not

exceeding five thousand dollars nor less than fifty dollars, or be

imprisoned for any time not exceeding two years, or both; Provided,

however, That when the merchandise so fraudulently imported or

brought into the Philippine Islands is opium, the offender shall be imprisoned for a period of not less than one nor more than five years, with or without fine. Whenever, on trial for a violation of

this section, the defendant is shown to have or to have had possession of such goods, such possession shall be deemed suffici-

-ent evidence to authorise conviction, unless the defendant shall
